Discovery Gallery with Coswick. ALEXANDER BURY

The Big Man

“Sport defines me. No matter what life throws at me, I will make it out – I will escape, I will get out, I will survive”.

Alex makes you feel comfortable instantly. He is tall and kind with a trendy hairstyle. He has the sparks in the eyes, a friendly smile, light and slightly bouncy body movements. You can’t resist but to gaze up and down admiring this height, which does not bother him anymore.

The Game has Always been Easy

Alex started playing tennis when he was just seven, but it wasn’t until sixteen that he realized that sport is his destiny.

“There were many of us who started playing early in life, but many have dropped out by sixteen-seventeen, mainly because they did not get anywhere, and they got tired. For me, it was different. It was around that age that I started to really get good and progress. The game became easy, and I wanted to know how far I can go? This is the reason why I am still in tennis”, – tells us Alexander.

Alex is rated 58th in the doubles division ATP ratings, and he took the first place in ATP Tournament in 2015 in Switzerland.

It took a bit of time for Alex to realize that he had certain advantages by playing in doubles division. His height turned out to be very practical when playing with a partner on the full court.

The ideal height for a tennis player is 190 +/- 5cm. This height permits to generate a strong serve, while still having the optimal mobility. Once you go above this height, the energy that is wasted to move around the courts goes up exponentially.

“My height gives me a significant advantage in serving. I can serve with a speed of 210-215 km/hr, and I can receive a ball earlier. But moving around the court is much harder for me. So, I have to avoid lengthy rallies. There are many of those in singles. In this respect, playing doubles is so much easier and more enjoyable. Everything goes by very fast: interception, attack, defence, one move can make or break a game. It is more unpredictable; you cannot predict what the next rally will be like”.

When Alex was a teenager, he had a major growth spurt. His classmates would make jokes, which bothered him.

“But I quickly realized that there aren’t that many people out there like me, so I was unique. And I stopped paying attention to them. Their attention gave me an interesting kind of energy that charged me to be better”, – admits the tennis player.

The Ideal Partner

In doubles, the choice of partner is essential.

“There are two people playing with one goal in mind. You have to feel comfortable with your partner; you have to feel him on the courts, where he is, what he plans to do”, – shares Alex.

During his career, Alexander played with some of the top-rated players in the world. He played together with Maksim Mirnyi numerous times. Together, they went to the last two Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and London.

“Max is a total professional star! And a perfect partner. I feel completely comfortable with him in the game and as a friend. This was a mind-blowing experience”, – recalls our hero.

Before the Next Push

Right now, there is a time-out in Alex’s life. He paused his career; he stopped playing in tournaments for now.

“Right now, my goal is to bring the Davis Cup home. I have to work on myself, develop and grow, – shares Alex with us. – I just finished several courses for coaches and received USPTR and PTR certification. These are highly rated in the USA and Europe. I wasn’t just taught to be a coach; I learned a lot that will improve my own game. I started paying attention to my health and well-being; I started running. I understood what kind of workload I need”.

Alexander plans to train full-time, so that he will be ready for the next season: “I plan to get back into the game. Solidify my ratings. But I want to stay fit, healthy, enjoy the game”.

Anna and the Bear Cub

Alexander is happy to share that he is also using the time off to spend some extra time with his family: his wife, Anna, and their four-year-old son, Misha. In Russian, Misha means a bear cub. He sincerely opened up to us and said that his family is his most profound treasure.

“There is almost no time for family when I am out on tours. It is very hard. So, whenever I have free time, I spend it with my family”, – tells us Alex.

Misha is already starting to play soccer and train in gymnastics. He likes both while the parents enjoy watching the progress. They are both confident that sport will be a big part of his life because it is in the genes. His father is a tennis player, mother is a handball player, grand-father was a track-and-field athlete, who is now a massotherapist for the tennis team, and his grandmother was a swimmer and rower.

Alexander tells us openly that peace in his family life is mostly because of him. He can not fight. In sport, this was a problem, but his soft character and personality plays out well in family life.

Professional sport makes you very strong. A long time ago, Alex learned how to handle any situation, how to be hard and determined. But in daily life, he is a big man with an open heart.
